Orbis Lumen provides ongoing security update services along with major and minor version update services for each of the Linux distributions we support. Organization contacts are notified via email with a detail of all system updates after they occur, or before they occur if a potential downtime needs to be scheduled.
Each Linux distribution releases security updates and fixes to software components throughout the year. Infrequently, these updates require modification of the system level to support these changes.
Having Orbis Lumen handle your security updates and fixes ensures that your production systems will always have the most stable and secure software components available in your Linux distribution, without the necessity of your intervention or focus.
Linux distributions occasionally release minor version upgrades which incorporate all prior fixes and security issue resolutions, packaged into one new minor version. Minor version releases rarely have any new, fundamental changes when systems are kept up-to-date with security updates and fixes as they are released.
Major version releases present a more challenging upgrade process for both servers and workstations. Major version releases are infrequent and can result in radical changes to the methodologies of the operating system and the various system and application components.
Orbis Lumen thoroughly tests the upgrade process well before applying any major version updates to customer systems, identifying potentially problematic areas, and working out solutions. This mitigates problems and their associated costs to customers during a major version upgrade.
We strongly recommend clients keep their systems up-to-date with the latest security updates and fixes. If customers opt to handle their own updates with Orbis Lumen built systems, we will certainly do all we can to help in the event of difficulties. However, we strongly recommend clients allow Orbis Lumen to maintain their systems for them. The cost is exceedingly minimal and the "ride" is far more smooth.
In an act of altruistic fascism, Orbis Lumen requires clients to upgrade their system with all major version updates if they would like Orbis Lumen to provide their ongoing update services. Linux distributions provide security updates and fixes for legacy versions only for a limited time after new major versions are released. As such, we can only offer the highest quality service if client systems are kept up-to-date -- and that is what we do.
However, in quite rare instances, we recognize that some applications of systems may require maintaining a legacy configuration. In these events, we will help clients isolate these derelict systems to minimize any potential security risks, while doing all we can to maintain their functionality.
